What in my zero-waste makeup bag? (gym/travel)

I am so pleased with the plastic-free products I have found for my on-the-go toiletries bag. I have been toting these around to the gym, and they are also my go-to products for travel, including my upcoming trip to [drum roll] CANADA and ICELAND! (woop woop! I am obviously lying in bed writing this blog instead of packing, as all good travelers would). In any case, these are a few of the plastic-free things I love.

Dental hygiene

These are pretty standard selections – a bamboo toothbrush, and solid toothpaste. While I do make my own tooth paste, out of curiosity, I decided to try Georganic’s tooth soap stick. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get accustomed to the taste and texture, you might also love it. . I also have been using their plastic-free floss, which has been fantastic (which you can get refills for the glass/tin container).

DeodorantIMG_8652.jpg

Crystal deo: As soon as I hop out of the shower, I apply the solid crystal deodorant. I feel like this is adequate for days that I am mostly sedentary.

Deodorant spray: If I am having a more active day, I will freshen up with a spritz of Weleda’s sage deodorant (or my DIY version – water, vodka, and essential oils sage, lavender and tea tree, which I will hopefully post a recipe for soon).

Hair care

I have a really simple hair routine – I wash my hair 1-2 times a week, so all I need is a chunk of solid shampoo, which I will also use as a body wash while traveling. Lush’s Trichomania has long been a fav of mine (because mmmmm coconut).

Skincare

Serum: I have upped my skin care game with a morning and evening serum from The Ordinary (which comes in glass bottles, with a small amount of plastic for the top). My morning serum rides around in my gym bag, since I usually go to the gym first thing in the morning, I carry around my AM serum (Niacinamide + Zinc). My evening serum (hyaluonic acid) lives at home. I would leave my serum behind when flying, since I like to reduce liquids as much as possible.

Only the good stuff lotion (diy): I have been making my own lotion for over 2 years now, and I still love it (my original recipe can be found here). I have just started a new version, which I have started using on both my face and body using whipped shea butter + coconut oil + other oils. (I will be sharing a recipe soon). I also use this on my body as well as my face.

Sunscreen: I have started using Shade sunscreen, an all-natural, plastic-free, mineral sunscreen. I have a very small one for my travel bag, but have only started with this product, so will hold off on my review.

Makeup

RMS beauty “un”cover up – I dab a small amount on my face with my finger and use a tiny beauty blender to smear it into my face.

Brow crayon: I am a big fan of Lush’s brow crayon. One of the difficulties of a zero-package approach is often portability. This naked crayon will get all over my makeup bag, but I found the perfect solution in the baking cupboard. There was a small plastic bottle that used to hold sprinkles that fits my pencil perfectly, without adding much bulk. This is great for my gym bag, so I don’t ruin the crayon or the rest of my makeup.

Blush & mascara & lipstick: I am still using up my plastic-y versions, but will update when I have new products.

Everything balm: I use Trilogy’s Everything Balm for almost everything. This is a great lip balm for daily use, but I also use it as a cuticle treatment, and hand lotion in a pinch. I have also used this as an anti-friction cream on my feet to prevent blisters while running. Also pictured is my refillable travel perfume bottle, for when I am feeling extra fancy.

That’s all for now! Hope you are having a beautiful day!
