Mountain air to heal our souls: Hallstatt, Austria

After our plans for Vienna were cancelled, we decided to go on a day trip to the alps to drink in the mountain air. It is quite a long day trip from Vienna, but well worth the journey.

Hallstatt is an adorable village tucked into an alpine valley, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the breathtaking views and a long cultural history.

When we tumbled out of the tour bus, we went directly to the line for the Hallstatt SkyWalk – an outcropped lookout 800 meters above the lake with views of the mountains, lake, and town nestled below. Good thing it was stunning, as we were in line for at least an hour to take the short gondola up to the top.

After taking our obligatory 874 photos, we headed down the mountain into the town. The town is simply adorable – home to less than 1,000 people, this town welcomes millions of visitors each year. There is evidence of salt mining on the Hallstatt Salzberg going back as early as 2000 B.C.

While my companions went in search of food, I went for the most amazing swim in the pristine lake. It was marvelous!

If you find yourself in Vienna thirsting for some fresh mountain air, I recommend this tour. It’s a long time on the bus, but stunning: https://www.viator.com/partner-shop/lovelyoutliers/W-e77fd4df-67c9-4414-a703-15bdad85e780
